This mosaic adaptation demonstrates that complex social processing does not intrinsically require the massive absolute neural tissue seen in endotherms. Consequently, researchers argue that macro-evolutionary theories of brain expansion must expand to incorporate sensory-motor adaptations, which more accurately explain the massive neural tissue differences between mammals and fishes [cite: 32, 38].
