During REM sleep, the brain stitches these disparate memory fragments together into a simulated narrative [cite: 11]. By evaluating the emotional resonance of these novel associations as the dream unfolds, the brain determines whether the newly formed connections contain useful predictive information for future survival or problem-solving [cite: 6]. Therefore, the bizarreness of dreams is not an error resulting from random neural noise, but a deliberate feature of an algorithm searching for abstract connections and divergent problem-solving pathways [cite: 36, 40].
